Sunset Bistro Information

Tucked along the water at 31 Bayside Dr in Saranac Lake, Sunset Bistro feels like one of those places you almost don’t want to tell people about, just to keep it from getting too crowded. The location alone does a lot of the heavy lifting-right by the lake, with views that really come alive in the evening-but it’s the overall dining experience that keeps people coming back and leaving glowing reviews.

Walking in, the atmosphere strikes a nice balance between casual and thoughtfully put together. It’s not overly fancy, but there’s a clear attention to detail in the décor and layout, with warm lighting and windows that frame the water. If you can snag a table near sunset, it’s worth timing your visit around it. The vibe leans relaxed and welcoming, the kind of place where you can show up in jeans but still feel like you’re treating yourself.

The menu offers a solid range without feeling overwhelming. There’s a noticeable focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, which lines up with what you’d expect from a restaurant in the Adirondack region. Seafood dishes tend to stand out, especially anything featuring locally sourced fish when available, and the kitchen handles them with a light touch that lets the flavors come through. On one visit, the pan-seared salmon came out perfectly cooked with a crisp exterior and a tender center, paired with simple sides that didn’t try to steal the spotlight. The bistro also does a good job with comfort classics-think well-executed burgers, pastas, and a few rotating specials that keep things interesting for repeat guests.

Service here generally feels attentive without hovering. Staff seem knowledgeable about the menu and are quick to offer recommendations if you’re undecided, which is always a good sign. Even during busier evenings, the pacing stays fairly smooth, and it doesn’t feel like you’re being rushed out the door.

From a local perspective, this spot fits nicely into Saranac Lake’s dining scene. It’s not trying to be overly trendy or experimental, but instead focuses on consistency and a pleasant overall experience. Pricing sits in that mid-range sweet spot where it feels reasonable for the quality and setting, especially considering the waterfront location.

There isn’t a ton of publicly available detailed background about the restaurant’s history or ownership, so most impressions come directly from dining experiences and customer feedback, but based on what’s on the plate and the steady stream of positive reviews, it’s clear they’ve carved out a reliable niche for both visitors and locals looking for a laid-back meal with a view.

What People's Say About Place

My husband and I hosted our son and daughter-in-law’s rehearsal dinner at Sunset Bistro/Ampersand Bay Resort. Thank you, Brian LaVallee for going above and beyond! The flowers were done by LAKE PLACID FLOWER AND GIFT CO. (Lisa Kirby). They were simply STUNNING! Literally, from soup to nuts the entire event was spectacular. We cannot praise it enough; the flowers were gorgeous and the food plentiful and delicious. Chief Richard Brosseau and his staff were courteous and efficient and made sure the food was hot as it was served to our 36 guests. We would highly recommend this restaurant for dinner or for an event.

This bistro has a great location right on the lake. The decor was so appropriate for this setting as well. And the food was just excellent. My wife and I both had the salmon and it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The presentation was spot on too. Will definitely return the next time we are in the area.

After reading Chef Vicky’s resume, I was ecstatic to try her food at this location. We had the duck, wild mushroom toast, scallop ceviche and passion fruit cheesecake. No complaints on anything. The chef has a beautiful sense of flavor. I was pleasantly surprised for the Adirondacks at how elevated everything was. The decor is a little off, but it offers so much more than meets the eye. So excited to see how Vicky blossoms in her new space.

We had a wonderful, tasty dinner at Sunset! Everyone who works there did so with a smile on their face. We enjoyed our table looking out on the boats/water and behind us, the kitchen had an open concept so we could watch the chefs at work. Our server was very friendly and attentive throughout. We especially enjoyed the homemade desserts (it is very hard to find a restaurant homemaking desserts) I would recommend this place to any foodie.

Hard to find but totally worth it. Beautiful restaurant right on Amperstand Bay with gorgeous views. The drinks were delicious and they have an extensive wine and beer list. I had the catch of the day which was delicious and fresh. My husband ordered the chicken pillaird which was equally enjoyed. Dessert was poached pears with a goat cheese cream and it was beyond!! This place exceeds expectations...make reservations!

**Sunset Bistro: A Hidden Gem in Saranac Lake** Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Saranac Lake, New York, Sunset Bistro offers a truly hidden paradise for those seeking a culinary escape. This charming establishment boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely meal. The menu features a delightful array of dishes, showcasing fresh, locally sourced ingredients. One standout is the grilled romaine Caesar salad, a unique and flavorful twist on a classic. The crispy, grilled romaine leaves add a delightful texture, while the creamy dressing and Parmesan cheese provide a satisfying balance of flavors. Sunset Bistro is a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable dining experience in Saranac Lake.

Sunset Bistro at Ampersand Bay Resort completely changed my outlook on resort dining — this is a true hidden gem in the Adirondacks, and an absolute must if you’re in the area. Normally, I steer away from restaurants inside resorts. I’ve had better luck with local spots in town. But Sunset Bistro? It flipped that narrative for me, in the best possible way. We were staying at Ampersand Bay Resort (another review entirely — and also excellent), prepping for our summit hike of Mt. Marcy. After 11 hours and 40 minutes of rain, wind, mud, and scrambling to the top of New York’s highest peak, we were cold, wet, tired… and starving. Our group of five included some serious food lovers, and we had reserved Sunset Bistro for our post-hike celebratory dinner — seeking something upscale, convenient, and worthy of the occasion. Let’s set the scene: We rolled out of bed at 4:45 AM, hit the trail by 6:30, and finished just in time to rush back to the resort and change before our 7:45 PM reservation. Thankfully, we were staying in the Saranac Suite — right above the restaurant — so all we had to do was (carefully!) hobble down the stairs. The vibe? Perfect. Casual and inviting, but still refined — ideal for winding down after a massive day. There’s a warmth to the space: cozy yet trendy, laid-back yet worthy of a special night out. The view of Lower Saranac Lake at sunset is breathtaking. Watching the water, the boats, and the golden light dancing on the lake made the night feel magical. The open kitchen added a nice sense of energy, and the deck looked like a dream for warmer evenings. Service? Flawless. Attentive, genuine, and elevated without being stuffy. A wine expert on staff helped guide our selections — which we appreciated even more since one of our hikers makes wine and we know a thing or two ourselves. We started with a Brunello, and later, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape — both excellent. They’ve earned a 2024 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and it’s clear why. A huge shoutout to Brian, the resort GM, who welcomed us like old friends. It was a quiet Monday night, and we invited him to share a glass of wine with us — he was the perfect host, rounding out what already felt like a perfect night. Now for the food — truly outstanding. Several in our group had the Duck Breast, pastrami dry-rubbed and perfectly seared, served with sweet potato mash, asparagus, and a cherry-balsamic reduction. It was elegant, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I had the evening special — Trout with Beurre Noisette, served with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. The fish was tender and moist, and the brown butter sauce tied everything together masterfully. This isn’t just a “resort restaurant” — this is a destination in its own right. The view is stunning, yes. But unlike so many places with a great view and mediocre food, Sunset Bistro delivers across the board: thoughtful cuisine, an exceptional wine list, and warm, memorable service. If you’re anywhere near Saranac Lake, make a reservation. Whether you’re celebrating something big or just want to enjoy a beautiful lakeside evening, this place is something special.
